Character Type: OC
Character Blurb: Keni is from a small, isolated mountain town in the modern-day United States, with his family living on the "poor side" of an already economically struggling rural community. He's seemingly a very unassuming, quiet, and easy-going kid, with a crude/childish sense of humor, and a concerning lack of impulse control when it comes to his own health or safety. Because what's the point in caring about whether he gets hurt or killed when he can't stay dead?
Recently, he found out his parents were briefly part of a cult, and they let them do a ritual on his pregnant mother. He became the result of the cult's botched ritual to bring an "Old God" back into his world. As far as he can tell, all it actually did was curse him to constantly die, then resurrect as if nothing ever happened. While he's tried to find out more about the cult, what they did to him, and why, he hasn't managed to dig up much. Supposedly, his parents remember next to nothing from their time with them, the few cult members he's tracked down weren't exactly forthcoming with answers, and the few Eldritch creatures they have managed to bring back weren't really chatty either.
Character Arc Ideas: A lot of Keni's big character moments have centered around the ways that he takes care of the people around him, vs how little he cares for himself. He has a penchant for self-destructive behavior; whether it's struggling with various addictions, giving into his more reckless impulses, or being self-sacrificing to a fault. He's used to putting the needs of others before himself, has largely stopped caring about how much he might get hurt, and has very little self-worth that isn't tied to how useful he is to the people he cares about.
In-game I can see him keeping with that habit, leaning into a kind of caregiver/support role on the team. And I would like for him to have to reckon with his self-destructive behavior. As well as learn that letting people help him, or opening up to people, isn't going to automatically turn him into a burden, or lead to some karmic punishment.
CR You're Interested In:
Teens - For a kid who doesn't usually talk much, Keni is a surprisingly social person who hates feeling alone. So he'll definitely be gravitating toward the other teens. He tends to match the energy of whoever he's with, so he can vacillate between calmly hanging out in comfortable silence with someone for hours, to being a mischievous feral gremlin child who will tussle with whoever's willing to put up with it. It all depends on who he's with and their mood. Also, due to being "the responsible" one in his family, he can occasionally fall into the role of "mom friend" out of habit. He's a very 'takes care of people the way he wishes he was taken care of' kind of dude.
Adults - Keni has never met an adult he could trust long term. To say his parents aren't exactly good caretakers would be the understatement of a century, and while some of his friends' parents are nice enough, they aren't reliable. So he tends to be either polite but skittish around adults, or treats them with open suspicion/disdain if they start treating him like a kid or showing a sudden vested interest in him. He's a kid who desperately needs a responsible adult in his life, but has long since given up on the idea that any adult would care about him without having an ulterior motive. While I love the idea of this CR, this is a fair warning that trying to get close to him as an adult, or trying to parent him won't be easy, and may lead to some negative CR or learning about his home life (which can lead into heavy topics, like abuse, child neglect and addiction). So if anyone isn't interested in that, I totally understand.
Scientists - The kid is very mechanically inclined, and has a love for engineering and general science that he's never really been given much of a chance to nurture. I would love to have him learn from characters who are willing to let him help with projects or just talk shop with him. It would be an easy way to get some potentially positive CR with him.
Other Immortals - Particularly characters who know what it's like to "die" but never stay dead. He's had to live alone with his curse his entire life, with no one remembering or believing him when he tries to talk about it. So it would be cool for him to be able to commiserate with someone who knows what it's like.
People Who Have Lovecraftian Connections - He desperately wants to know more about Eldritch creatures, Elder Gods, and the worlds they come from. So, having him get to talk to people who have had to deal with Eldritch elements in their own canon would be awesome.
People Who've Delt with Cults - Let's commiserate about how cults suck!

OK, seriously, Eight was raised in a high control environment, though his was the army and not a cult. It kind of all collapsed during the very first encounter Eight ever had with the opposing army, and he wasn't even fighting them. The one wrinkle is that his memories of that time are super patchwork because of what amounts to involuntary brain surgery.
Course there's other routes. Eight was forced to participate in brutal tests of skill where failure meant instant detonation of a bomb strapped to his back. Octolings have the tech where they can be entirely revived if that happens, but that still meant he was ripped apart and reformed over and over again. That he remembers. Quite clearly, in fact...
And, y'know, also: he's a gentle, helpful dude. If all else fails, there's that.

Keni's desperately wanted someone in his life who he could talk about his deaths with, someone who would believe him and understand, but finding out this sweet little dude not only knows what that's like, but went through ALL THAT SHIT, it's gonna break his heart. It's like he had his wish granted on a monkey's paw!
